10 ml refill limit

The 10 ml limit in Germany concerns the maximum volume of a refill container holding nicotine-containing liquid. It describes the individual container size, not nicotine concentration or a general possession quantity; product classification and current law remain decisive.

Open term
Law & labelling

2 ml tank

A 2 ml tank is a liquid reservoir with a nominal capacity of two millilitres, often built as a pod or cartridge. The term initially describes capacity; whether a statutory 2 ml limit applies in Germany depends on product type and design.

Open term
Law & labelling

2 ml tank limit

Under Germany's Tobacco Products Act, the 2 ml limit covers nicotine-containing disposable electronic cigarettes and single-use cartridges with a maximum of two millilitres. Other designs require separate legal classification; a marketing name alone does not decide scope.

Law & labelling

20 mg/ml limit

The 20 mg/ml limit means nicotine-containing liquid intended for vaporisation may contain no more than 20 milligrams of nicotine per millilitre in Germany. It does not state the dose actually absorbed, which also depends on device and use.

Adults only

In Germany, e-cigarettes, e-shishas and their containers may not be supplied to children or adolescents. Section 10 of the Youth Protection Act also covers nicotine-free variants and distance selling.

Open term
Law & labelling

Advertising restriction

Advertising restrictions limit marketing of e-cigarettes and refill containers in Germany according to medium and content. Prohibitions cover certain audiovisual, printed and outdoor advertising forms among others; a specific communication requires assessment under current rules.

Open term
Law & labelling

Age verification

Age verification is the process suppliers use to ensure vape products in Germany are offered and handed only to adults. In online retail, ordering and delivery must implement youth protection effectively; the compliant method depends on the particular sales channel.

Open term
Safety & health

Allergic reaction

An allergic reaction is an immune response to an ingredient, flavouring or material and can appear in many ways. Symptoms alone do not prove the cause; new or persistent reactions need medical assessment, while severe breathing difficulty, major swelling or circulatory problems require 112.

Open term
Law & labelling

Article 20 TPD

Article 20 TPD provides the EU framework specifically for nicotine-containing e-cigarettes and refill containers. It addresses notification, volume and nicotine limits, safety, leaflets, labelling and market monitoring; concrete German duties follow from the implementing rules.

Open term
Safety & health

Authenticity code

An authenticity code is a manufacturer-issued sequence used to check a product in its official system. A valid result can provide evidence but is not an independent safety assessment; copied codes and imitation verification sites remain possible.

Open term
Law & labelling

Batch number

A batch number links a product to a particular manufacturing or filling lot. On e-cigarettes and refill containers in Germany it supports traceability, complaints and recalls; it is not the same as an individual serial number or proof of authenticity.

Open term
Safety & health

Battery case

A battery case is a non-conductive, closable container for loose removable cells. It separates terminals from coins, keys and other cells and reduces short-circuit risk; a cracked case or damaged battery is still unsafe for ordinary transport.

Open term
Law & labelling

Battery law

Battery law refers to rules on manufacture, labelling, take-back and treatment of batteries and waste batteries. Since October 2025, Germany's framework particularly comprises the directly applicable EU Batteries Regulation and the BattDG implementation act; ElektroG also remains relevant for built-in vape cells.

Open term
Safety & health

Battery safety

Battery safety covers selecting, using, charging, transporting and disposing of lithium cells within specification. Correct cell type, intact insulation, protected terminals and suitable charging electronics are essential; heat, deformation, unusual smell or noise require immediate cessation of use.

Open term
Safety & health

Battery short circuit

A battery short circuit connects positive and negative terminals through very low resistance, potentially creating dangerous current and heat within seconds. Loose cells therefore need protected terminals; after a short, heating or damage, all further use and charging must stop.

Open term
Law & labelling

Best-before date

A best-before date indicates how long the manufacturer expects specified product qualities under correct storage. It is neither an automatic disposal date nor always a safety guarantee; damaged, leaking or noticeably changed liquids should not be used regardless of date.

Open term
Law & labelling

CE marking

CE marking states that the manufacturer considers the marked product compliant with applicable EU harmonisation requirements. On vape hardware it may cover electrical aspects; it is not an independent quality seal or confirmation that an e-liquid is harmless to health.

Open term
Safety & health

Child-resistant cap

A child-resistant cap is designed to make an e-liquid bottle harder for young children to open. It is not completely childproof: it must engage correctly after every use, while the closed bottle remains out of children's sight and reach.

Open term
Safety & health

Child-safe storage

Child-safe storage keeps vapes, liquids, pods, batteries and accessories closed, out of sight and reliably beyond children's reach. A high shelf alone may not suffice; child-resistant closures must engage and devices must not be accessible like toys.

Open term
Safety & health

Counterfeit vape

A counterfeit vape imitates a brand, package or device without authorisation. Its origin, components, battery cell and liquid contents may be uncertain; if suspected, do not use or charge it and verify through official manufacturer channels and relevant authorities.

Open term
Law & labelling

Crossed-out wheeled-bin symbol

The crossed-out wheeled-bin symbol marks electrical equipment or batteries requiring separate collection from unsorted municipal waste. On a vape in Germany it means: do not place it in residual or packaging waste; use an authorised return point.

Open term
Safety & health

Damaged battery

A damaged battery may show torn insulation, dents, corrosion or leakage and must not be used or charged. If hot, hissing, smoking or rapidly swelling, do not touch or transport it: keep away, warn others and call 112 for immediate danger; arrange collection only for a cooled, stable damaged cell.

Open term
Law & labelling

Distance selling

Distance selling supplies products without simultaneous in-person contact and then delivers them to customers. For vapes in Germany, youth-protection, tax and product-law duties apply; cross-border sales may trigger additional registration and compliance requirements.

Open term
Safety & health

Dry mouth

Dry mouth is a nonspecific feeling of reduced oral moisture that can occur with vaping but does not automatically demonstrate dehydration. If it persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, the cause should receive medical or dental assessment.

Open term
Law & labelling

E-liquid excise duty

E-liquid excise duty is Germany's tobacco tax on substitutes for tobacco intended for use in e-cigarettes. It is charged by volume and may include nicotine-free mixing components; the current tobacco-tax rules determine the rate and precise classification.

Open term
Safety & health

E-liquid ingestion

E-liquid ingestion can be acutely dangerous, especially with nicotine; for an alert person rinse the mouth, do not induce vomiting and contact a poison centre immediately, calling 112 for severe signs. Animal exposure requires prompt veterinary practice or clinic assessment because human poison centres do not cover it.

Open term
Law & labelling

Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act

Germany's Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act, or ElektroG, governs registration, take-back and environmentally sound treatment of waste electrical equipment. Electronic vapes generally fall within this disposal framework; special take-back duties for e-cigarette distributors also apply from 2026.

Open term
Safety & health

Emergency response

Emergency response depends on the event: in Germany contact a poison centre immediately for suspected e-liquid or nicotine poisoning, and call 112 for fire, explosion, unconsciousness, severe breathing difficulty or other immediate danger to life. Personal safety takes priority over recovering a device.

Open term
Law & labelling

EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD)

The EU Tobacco Products Directive 2014/40/EU, or TPD, harmonises core rules for tobacco and related products across the internal market. Article 20 concerns e-cigarettes; in Germany, the national implementing provisions and other directly applicable EU law govern.

Open term
Law & labelling

EU-CEG

EU-CEG is the common EU electronic portal through which businesses submit required information on tobacco products, e-cigarettes and refill containers to Member States. It is a reporting channel; submission there confirms neither compliance nor product safety.

Open term
Safety & health

Eye contact with e-liquid

Eye contact with e-liquid can cause painful irritation and, when nicotine is present, additional exposure. Remove contact lenses, immediately rinse the open eye with clean lukewarm water for 10 to 15 minutes and contact a poison centre; persistent symptoms need medical assessment.

Open term
Law & labelling

Hazard pictogram

A hazard pictogram is a diamond-shaped CLP symbol for a classified substance or mixture hazard, such as acute toxicity. Which symbols a liquid requires in Germany depends on composition and classification; pictograms must be read with the signal word and precautionary statements.

Open term
Law & labelling

Health warning

A health warning is the legally prescribed text on packs of nicotine-containing e-cigarettes and refill containers in Germany. It highlights nicotine's strong addictive potential; the Tobacco Products Ordinance specifies its design, position and share of the pack surface.

Open term
Safety & health

Heat exposure

Heat exposure can alter e-liquid, deform seals and accelerate ageing or hazardous stress in lithium batteries. Keep devices and liquids away from heaters, flames and very hot vehicles; unusually hot or swollen batteries must not remain in use.

Open term
Law & labelling

Ingredient list

An ingredient list names the constituents of an e-liquid or product under applicable labelling rules. In Germany, e-cigarette and refill-container packs list ingredients in descending order by weight; the list alone assesses neither purity nor risk.

Open term
Law & labelling

Market surveillance

Market surveillance is official oversight of whether products on the German market meet applicable safety, labelling and marketing requirements. Authorities may examine documents, test samples and order measures; absence of a public warning is not individual confirmation of safety.

Open term
Safety & health

Minors and vaping

Minors and vaping is a youth and health protection issue: nicotine can cause dependence, and developing young people should not face avoidable aerosol exposure. In Germany, supplying or shipping e-cigarettes to under-18s is prohibited even when nicotine-free.

Open term
Safety & health

Nicotine dependence

Nicotine dependence is a condition that may involve craving, adaptation and difficulty reducing or stopping use. Nicotine has strong addictive potential; the term is not a self-diagnosis, and individual concerns belong with qualified medical or addiction support.

Open term
Safety & health

Nicotine poisoning

Nicotine poisoning is acute harm caused by excessive nicotine exposure, for example after ingestion or a high dose. Symptoms are not diagnostic: in Germany contact a poison centre immediately if suspected, and call 112 for unconsciousness, seizures, severe breathing difficulty or other life-threatening signs.

Open term
Safety & health

Non-smokers

Non-smokers gain no health benefit from starting to vape but may develop nicotine dependence and aerosol exposure. German product information must state that e-cigarettes are not recommended for non-smokers; nicotine-free does not automatically mean risk-free.

Open term
Law & labelling

Package leaflet

A package leaflet provides required user information for e-cigarettes and refill containers in Germany. It must explain use, storage, warnings, possible health effects and responsible contact details among other matters; it does not replace the complete device manual.

Open term
Safety & health

Pet-safe storage

Pet-safe storage prevents animals reaching, chewing or licking devices, pods and liquid bottles. Nicotine-containing e-liquid can be acutely dangerous to animals; in Germany, suspected exposure requires calling a veterinary practice or clinic immediately because human poison centres do not handle animal cases.

Open term
Safety & health

Poison control centre

A poison control centre is a regional toxicology advice service for acute or suspected poisoning, including from e-liquid or nicotine. Germany has several centres rather than one nationwide number; call 112 instead when there is immediate danger to life.

Open term
Law & labelling

Product notification

Product notification is advance reporting by manufacturers or importers to the authority before marketing e-cigarettes or refill containers. It includes technical, ingredient and toxicological information; notification is not an official quality rating or automatic market authorisation.

Open term
Law & labelling

Product recall

A product recall instructs users to stop using and return a specified product because of an identified risk or compliance failure. Brand, model, batch and official or manufacturer notices are decisive; affected devices should not be opened or mailed without instructions.

Open term
Safety & health

QR verification

QR verification opens a product or checking page from a scanned code. Confirm the domain and manufacturer connection before entering information because codes can be redirected or covered; a scan result alone proves neither authenticity nor compliance.

Open term
Safety & health

Respiratory irritation

Respiratory irritation may present as coughing, burning or tightness after aerosol exposure, but these signs do not establish a diagnosis. End exposure and obtain medical assessment for persistent symptoms; in Germany call 112 for severe breathing difficulty or danger to life.

Open term
Safety & health

Safe charging

Safe charging uses only the manufacturer-approved charging method, a suitable power supply and undamaged cables on a stable, non-combustible surface. Keep device and battery observable and ventilated; unusual heat, smell, sound or deformation means charging must stop.

Open term
Safety & health

Second-hand exposure

Second-hand exposure means other people take in exhaled vape aerosol or its constituents from surrounding air. Amount and composition vary but are not zero; distance, ventilation and refraining in shared spaces protect people who did not choose exposure.

Open term
Safety & health

Skin contact with e-liquid

Skin contact with e-liquid can irritate, and nicotine may be absorbed through skin. Quickly remove contaminated clothing, rinse affected skin thoroughly with clean lukewarm water and contact a poison centre; follow its case-specific advice for marked symptoms or substantial exposure.

Open term
Safety & health

Storage in sunlight

Storage in direct sunlight heats the device, battery and liquid unpredictably and may also alter ingredients and packaging. Windowsills and parked cars are particularly unsuitable; use a cool, dry, light-protected location consistent with product instructions.

Open term
Safety & health

Tamper-evident seal

A tamper-evident seal uses a ring, film or closure to show whether a pack was probably opened before. It cannot reliably prevent tampering or confirm product quality; an unexpectedly broken or missing seal is reason not to use the product.

Open term
Law & labelling

Tax stamp

A tax stamp on a pack intended for the German market documents payment of the applicable tobacco tax through the tax-mark procedure. For taxable e-liquids it is a fiscal marker, not a comprehensive authenticity guarantee or quality and safety assessment.

Open term
Safety & health

Thermal runaway

Thermal runaway is a self-accelerating overheating reaction inside a battery cell that can produce gas, fire or explosion. Extreme heat, hissing, smoke or rapid swelling are emergency signs: keep away, warn others and call 112 for fire or immediate danger.

Open term
Law & labelling

Tobacco Products Act

The Tobacco Products Act is Germany's central statute for tobacco and related products, including e-cigarettes and refill containers. It addresses ingredients, product design, market duties, packaging and advertising; detailed obligations also arise from ordinances and EU law.

Open term
Law & labelling

Tobacco Products Ordinance

The Tobacco Products Ordinance details requirements of Germany's Tobacco Products Act. For e-cigarettes and refill containers it covers product notifications, leaflets, ingredient information, warnings and refill mechanisms among other matters; the current text is always authoritative.

Open term
Safety & health

Unattended charging

Unattended charging means nobody can notice and respond to overheating or a fault, for example overnight or while away. Lithium batteries should therefore not charge unobserved; protection circuitry reduces risk but does not eliminate it.

Open term
Safety & health

Vaping during pregnancy

Vaping during pregnancy is not risk-free; nicotine can affect fetal development, and nicotine-free aerosols are not automatically harmless. Individual circumstances should be discussed early with a doctor, midwife or other appropriately qualified maternity professional.

Open term
Safety & health

Water damage

Water damage occurs when moisture enters electronics, contacts or the battery area and may cause corrosion or short circuits. Do not use, charge or dry the affected device with strong heat; the manufacturer or a qualified service should assess further safety.

Open term
Law & labelling

Youth protection

Youth protection comprises rules shielding children and adolescents from the supply and use of e-cigarettes. In Germany, Section 10 of the Youth Protection Act is central; its restrictions apply whether or not the particular vape product contains nicotine.
